Hey,
Hope you had an awesome loooooong weekend. It’s come to my attention that some of our loyal fans are not fighters and didn’t see our article in the Fighters Only Magazine in February.

Don’t worry, I got you covered!

Here it is:

Obviously this is a bit small for you to read so here is the article:

Gone are the days of spending endless hours on a treadmill or just focusing on strength training like bodybuilders. Many fitness specialists agree that MMA fighters can be regarded as some of the most superior functionally fit athletes on the planet. The vigorous training regimen of a professional fighter will make a weekend warrior bleed from the eyes. More and more people are moving away from the big commercial gyms and looking for their own piece of BST (blood, sweat and tears) heaven.

If you want to be successful in any sport you need to consider the move away from static machines and start focusing on performance based training. This is something that MMA athletes realized a while ago more recently this has influenced the current trend in functional fitness training. A good functional training program includes speed, power, strength, agility, balance, coordination and energy system training – all performed at a higher than normal intensity or under the pressure of time.

All types of individuals, from fitness enthusiasts and performance athletes, through to your weekend warriors can all be seen training at functional gyms. Sportcon Fitness & Performance Centre in Krugersdorp, Gauteng can be regarded as on of the most sophisticated and impressive of these new breed gyms. Gym owner, Stian Weideman is a sports performance specialist, qualified strength-and-conditoning coach, taekwondo black belt and MMA enthusiast. Stian is quick to acknowledge that his martial arts background and passion for sport specific conditioning remain key factors in the success of his business.

The facility has a performance area that includes power cages, specialized bars, turfed area and other functional based equipment. The fitness area consists of monkey bars, suspension training rig and 70 square meter matted area. The facility does not offer MMA specific classed per say but does focus on the strength & conditioning aspect of the sport. This means that many aspiring martial arts enthusiasts and interested parties are seeing excellent results with Sportcon. Stian is also an ambassador of Muscle Science products and especially believes in the benefits of the MSP range. Stian is using MSP 2 for recovery with all his performance athletes as well as Muscle Mass for all the guys that need to gain some mass in the off seasons. The results of athletes have increased tremendously since using MSP due to the improved recovery benefits allowing the athletes to train harder and more often.

Sportcon is a fitness and performance centre for adults and children who are serious about achieving results. Everything we do at our facility revolves around helping people to become champions. We want every member of our training family to be successful in all walks of life, so we teach them and provide them with the support they need to achieve just that. Sportcon not only provides training at our facility, but also consults for rugby, hockey and netball teams at Hoërskool Noordheuwel. We plan on educating sports coaches on the importance of sports performance conditioning and how to implement the correct programme for their specific setting.
Interview with owner Stian Weideman
1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your preferred form of training.
Sport and having a fit mind and body have always played a huge role in my life. While growing up I was fortunate to excel at rugby, cricket and athletics. I was even more successful at martial arts, where I obtained a black belt in taekwon-do and won two gold medals at the European Championships in Greece in 2007.

Based on my passion for sport and a fitness-oriented lifestyle my dream and my first choice of career was always in the sporting field. I was not drawn to the personal trainer industry, but I wanted to do something different that could positively impact on people’s lives. I wanted to help them achieve results by becoming fitter, healthier or reaching their sport-related goals. Through hard work and dedication over the past five years I have become a specialist in a field that is currently not well known in South Africa, namely the development of youth sports performance. My own training plan varies between general fitness and strength, with a large component of mixed martial arts-style training. My short term goal is to get back into the fighting ring/cage soon.
2. How would you describe Sportcon?
In my opinion we are the best in the business. I know it sounds arrogant, but we always strive to be the best at everything we do and you will see that when you walk into our facility – a 420 sqm facility that has everything you need to achieve the results you’re after. Everyone is treated like family and no one is left to figure things out for themselves or to work with a programme that has been designed for the masses. Each member has a training programme that is suited to their specific needs.

3. What is your training philosophy?
S.M.A.R.T (Superior Metabolic Accelerated Resistance Training) is the base of our body transformation system for adults, while the sports performance training depends on the athlete, sport and time of the season. We do not believe in machine-based, single joined exercises and all our training includes functional body movements that are used on a daily basis or in the athlete’s chosen sport. For our youth fitness programme we focus on teaching the children to create effective movement patterns, which enhances their coordination and their general ability to apply movements effectively in order to achieve better results.

4. What services do you provide and what types of clients do you cater to?
We provide a youth fitness programme for primary school children, a sports performance programme for high school athletes and a body transformation programme for adults. The body transformation programme is delivered in two parts, namely metabolic conditioning (group fitness) and S.M.A.R.T (small group) strength training. Our clients range from children who just want to have some fun while becoming fitter and high school athletes who want better results in their sport or performance at a provincial or national level, to adults who want to build muscle and lose fat.

5. What facilities do you have?
Our facility is divided into two parts:

1. Performance: Includes power cages, trap bars, Olympic bars and weights, football bars, kettlebells, dumbbells, sleds and a turf area for sprinting.

2. Fitness: Includes battling ropes, monkey bars, a 60 sqm padded floor, punching bags, power bands, skipping ropes and TRX rip trainers.

We also have a chill area and bathroom facilities with showers. We are a Muscle Science ambassador and therefore only promote their brand, especially the new MSP range.

6. tell us a bit about your trainers.
We currently have four trainers: Les, Neels, Anton (Buddy) and myself. All of us are focused on getting our members the best results. Les and Neels focus mainly on the S.M.A.R.T system while Buddy works with the metabolic group members. I specialise in training the sports performance athletes, but all the trainers assist with this programme, as well as the youth fitness programme.

7. How does your training and facility differ from other, more commercial gyms?
We don’t use any conventional exercise machines like the treadmills, spinning bikes and steppers you find in commercial gyms. And we don’t have mirrors in our facility. Each exercise we prescribe is tried and tested to get our members the best results in the shortest possible time, without injury. Educating members on correct technique and healthy habits is also important to us. Everyone is guided by professional trainers and they aren’t left on their own without proper assistance and guidance to do random exercises.

8. What benefits would someone gain by training at your facility as opposed to a big commercial club?
Members will lose body fat, gain muscle and perform better with our unique champion training system, which combines strength, power, speed and conditioning.

9. What is the atmosphere like at your facility?
We have a high energy, family-oriented environment that you won’t find anywhere else. While we are serious when it comes to training, we also have fun with our members when time allows as we want our members to forget about the stresses of everyday life when they train with us.

Do you know what the difference between weight loss and fat loss is? Most people think it’s the same thing, but it’s definitely not.

If you are obsessed with getting on the scale everyday your main focus is weight loss, not fat loss. Your weight can fluctuate during the day, especially when you factor in fluid retention, sodium intake and muscle weight.

If you want to focus on fat loss, getting on the scale is not the best method. Just because the scale is going down doesn’t mean you are losing fat. You might be losing water weight and worse of all muscle.

Muscle tissue is much denser than fat tissue and when you workout intelligently and consistently your lean muscle tissue increases and your body fat decreases. Two individuals can have an equal body fat percentage, but the leaner person will weigh more on the scale due to the higher density / weight of lean muscle tissue.

As you can see it is possible to lose weight, but still stay fat!

6 Tips to help you lose FAT!
1.Limit carbs if you are above 15% bodyfat
2.Eat less fatty foods
3.Eat more protein (most people don’t eat nearly enough protein)
4.Stop eating so much fruit
5.You’re not getting enough sleep
6.You’re not managing stress properly (stress produces cortisol that increases bodyfat storage)

Have a great week!

Training at home could be difficult because most of the time we don’t have the motivation or we are not sure what to do.

Today I will be making this process a lot easier for you. I have put together a short Home Metabolic Program that you can do on your own, with a partner/child or friend. It’s always better to do a workout with someone else as you won’t give up to0 quickly when things get tough.

The Home Metabolic Program combines 5 of the best bodyweight exercises to create a workout that can be “easy”, but at the same time very tough. If you want the best results from this or any other program you need to learn to push yourself.

You can complete this workout once to twice a week as a supplement to your normal training program – don’t forget your strength training as this is more of a conditioning program.

If there are any other programs you would like me to give you, please let me know in the comment section or on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/sportcon

I’ve been keeping the details of the 100 Day Challenge a secret for a while now, but it’s finally time to give you a little bit more information on how it’s going to work.

This is not a competition!

This is a personal challenge for you and you alone. I don’t want you to worry about how many kilograms or centimeters someone else looses, but rather focus on your own improvements. The 100 Day Champions Challenge is your own personal journey to a better you. So many transformation competitions are based on a 12-Week system that kicks your ass not stop and then just leaves you all on your own. Most of these participants do get good results, but don’t really keep those results for too long.

I want this challenge to be completely different!

Instead of giving you a 12-week plan instantly killing you with the warrior’s spear called: Paralysis By Analysis

I want to teach you how to hunt so that you can fight for yourself and not only become but actually stay a Champion Warrior (by this I mean be successful at your goals).

How do I plan on doing this?

HABIT CREATION

You will create the positive and remove the negative habits over time. Making it a lot easier for you to be successful!

How many times have you seen a diet starting off with: Remove all carbs, coffee, sugar and junk food from your diet! That sounds great in theory, but how long will you be able to last?

One, maybe two weeks tops…

During the 100 day period you will receive emails on a regular basis teaching you all about healthy habits and you will even be given some homework to do (no excuses about the dog ate my homework).

There will be videos for you to watch so that you can perform some exercises at home without any equipment and even advice on supplements (you don’t have to spend R2000 a month on supplements).

Monday 4 February 2013 the 100 Day Champions Challenge will be available. This does not mean you have to start on this date, it just means this is the first time it will be available. As of February 2013 we would like each and every current member as well as all future members to complete this challenge.
100 Day Champions Challenge = Your own personal challenge to a better you!

Over the last year or so I have been speaking to our members and have noticed a trend when it comes to nutrition. A lot of people understand what they need to eat, but either battle to prepare the food or just don’t have the time.

I myself have struggled with this. When my day gets very hectic and I don’t have a minute to spare I will grab whatever I can get my hands on – anything to fill the hole in my stomach. Most of the times this is something very unhealthy.

Before I go any further I want to give you the quickest solution to being successful in your nutritional journey.

ELIMINATE THE BAD!

Remove all sweets, fizzy drinks and preservative rich foods from your home.

Why?

If it’s there you will get the cravings for it. Believe me!!! If my wife buys cookies I will finish the box in a week, but if she doesn’t I can go without it for months. By eliminating all the bad things you have a better chance of being successful.

My New Secret Weapon – Mission Nutrition

Like I said earlier, most people struggle to find the time to cook healthy meals or just don’t understand how to prepare it properly.

My wife and I have tried this service out for the last couple of weeks and I am very impressed (see I got your back, if I died because of the food you would know that it’s not good for you but luckily I’m still alive and kicking). Here are the highlights of the service:

1.The menu changes regularly – no more boring salad on a daily basis
2.Fresh food prepared by a chef
3.Correct portion size
4.Mostly protein based, but can add more carbs if your goals were different (you get to tell her what your meal plan needs to look like)
5.Eliminate foods that you don’t like
6.Delivered to Sportcon on a daily basis – Free of charge!
7.Includes breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and 1.5L water every day
8.Very cost effective

The breakfast is not in this picture as I was too hungry before taking the picture!

As you can see the portions are perfect and if you behave yourself you might even get a cooler with your name on.

If you would like to be successful in your healthy lifestyle journey this will definitely help you 1000%.

I have managed to organize you a 15% discount on her regular fees, just because I’m so awesome! You can even go to her website at http://www.mission-nutrition.co.za to have a look at what she does.

If you would like to find out more about this service, please email me at info@sportcon.co.za or ask me the next time you are at the gym.

If you have any friends that could benefit from this service, please let them know.

Have an awesome day!

The core is the most important part of your body (maybe that’s why it’s called the core) and without having a strong one you will battle to do most movements. In my new FREE report True Core Strength I cover the following and more about what true core strength is:
1.Doing a 1000 sit ups a day won’t give you a six pack and definitely not a strong core.
2.The core is more than just your abdominal (stomach) muscles.
3.There are 2 different types of core training.
4.Why are your back hurting during core training?
5.The inner and outer core.
I have even included a Fundamental Core Circuit:
